To understand Mother's Day and what it really means, you need to understand the person in your life called 'Mother'. Mother is one who nurtures you in her womb for nine months and brings you forth to enjoy the supreme blessing on earth, that is, Life. Mother is one who guides you through your infancy and turns the soft, helpless creature to the powerful and successful YOU. She is the guardian angel protecting you and supporting you, feeling for you and serving you silently always with a smile on her face. She prides herself watching you grow and provides you a shoulder to cry on whenever you need. She is every child's best friend. For a child, every single day should be a Mothers Day. The essence of the meaning of Mother's Day is in the fact that we should try and make this day every year a memorable one for your mother. She should cherish the special feeling of this day and the intensity of that feeling should last her the lifetime.This is the day to stop, remember, and pray for that special person in our life, without whom we would not have been, what we are today; a day to prove that all her efforts, towards making us a complete person, have been worthwhile and make her feel proud for us. King Herod’s Tomb Found
from cnn.com~~~An Israeli archaeologist on Tuesday said he has found the tomb of King Herod, the legendary builder of ancient Jerusalem and the Holy Land — a potentially major discovery that capped a 35-year quest for the researcher.
Hebrew University archaeologist Ehud Netzer said the tomb was found at Herodium, a flattened hilltop in the Judean Desert where Herod built a palace compound. Netzer has been working at the site, just outside Jerusalem, since 1972, the university said.
Netzer said the tomb was discovered when a team of researchers found pieces of a limestone sarcophagus believed to belong to the ancient king. Although there were no bones in the container, he said the sarcophagus’ location and ornate appearance indicated it is Herod’s.
“It’s a sarcophagus we don’t just see anywhere,” Netzer said at a news conference. “It is something very special.” Netzer, who led the team, said he was not at the site when the sarcophagus was found.Continue Reading »

It is understandable, therefore, that the public is often disappointed and critical when a kidnapping victim found alive is revealed to have had seemingly enough contact with the outside world to make such an escape. Stories of survival can feel ruined when there turns out to have been what looks like an 'easy way out'.
One well-publicized example was that of Elizabeth Smart, the Utah teenager who was abducted at knifepoint from her bedroom in 2002. Nine months later she and her captors were stopped by police not far from her home. Elizabeth was in disguise, and lied about her identity. It was not until some time after being handcuffed and separated from the abductors that she began to cooperate. More recently, Missouri teenager Shawn Hornbeck was found in early 2007 after having been kidnapped and held for more than four years outside St. Louis, only 50 miles from home. Unlike Smart, Hornbeck was able to tell police officers who he was; it was revealed, though, that Hornbeck had been allowed Internet access and a fair degree of autonomy.
In such cases, it is extremely easy to blame the victims; it seems very plausible that the kidnapped individuals were simply not clever, resourceful, or courageous enough to flee their respective abductors. However, this disturbing tendency has little to do with any supposed weakness on the part of the victim. Given the right conditions, abductors are able to exert an astonishing amount of influence over their victims - to the point at which the captive has full loyalty to his or her captor while believing that this was his or her own choice. It is a cognitive phenomenon related to brainwashing and known as Stockholm syndrome.

Ancient Cave Paintings Found
Explorers have discovered a series of caves decorated with ancient Buddhist paintings, set in sheer cliffs in Nepal’s remote Himalayan north, leaving archaeologists excited and puzzled.
An international team of scholars, archaeologists, climbers and explorers examined at least 12 cave complexes at 14,000 feet near Lo Manthang, a mediaeval walled city in Nepal’s Mustang district, about 125 km northwest of Kathmandu.
The caves contain paintings that could date back as far as the 13th century, as well as Tibetan scripts executed in ink, silver and gold and pre-Christian era pottery shards.
“Who lived in those caves? When were they there, when were (the caves) first excavated and how did the residents access them, perched as they are on vertical cliffs?” asked Broughton Coburn, an American member of the survey team.

The First National Anthem

"God Save the Queen""God Save the Queen" (at the time "God Save the King") was first performed in public in 1745, although some evidence suggests it may have been first performed 1740. The tune itself is likely much older than that. The interesting thing, and one of the difficulties with this question, is that it has never been officially recognized as the national anthem of the United Kingdom, either by royal decree or by act of parliament. To this day, the United Kingdom does not have an official national anthem. It is, however, the official national anthem of Liechtenstein, although with different words - theirs is called "Oben am jungen Rhein" ("High Above the Young Rhine").The oldest national anthem to be officially declared a national anthem is "La Marseillaise". Written during the French Revolution, it which was officially recognized in 1795. Then banned by Napoleon in 1799, and again by Louis XVIII after restoring the monarchy in 1815. Then reinstated after the 1830 Revolution. Then banned again by Napoleon III in 1851. Then reinstated again in 1879. Then banned by the Vichy government in 1940. Then reinstated 1946 as part of the post-war constitution. And, just to make sure, it was again declared the national anthem in the 1958 constitution.

Maneki Neko~~Lucky Cats~~Japan

Maneki neko ("Beckoning" or "Welcoming" cats) are ceramic sculptures often found in the windows of restaurants and shops. To many Westerners, the cats appear to be waving, but they are actually beckoning customers into the shop (Japanese body langauge for "come here" has the palm facing out, rather than in).
Different meanings
Most traditional maneki neko are white with black and orange blotches, which is considered the luckiest combination. Other colors have special powers of their own, like black (wards off evil - popular with women wishing to avoid stalkers), red (keeps sickness and other evilness at bay), and pink (brings love).
A right paw up is supposed to attract wealth, while a raised left paw draws people (customers or visitors). Left paw maneki nekos are also common in bars and other places that sell alcohol - left-handedness is associated with strong drinkers in Japan.
Origins
Maneki nekos first began appearing in the beginning of the Meiji era (late 19th century). Noone knows how or why the tradition started, but there are numerous theories:
When the Meiji government decided to clean up Japan's sex districts by banning overtly sexual advertising and signage, brothels decided to use alluring kitties instead of welcoming ladies.
The figures were produced in honour of a cat that saved a lord by beckoning him away from a tree just before it was struck by lightning.
A wooden version was carved to console a courtesan whose cat had been beheaded by an over-zealous samurai.
Poverty forced an old woman to give up her cat. Later, the cat visited her in a dream, and inspired her to make clay figurines, which she sold to make her fortune.
A ramen stall gained an edge over its competitor by putting the little cat in its window.
The cat might not be beconing, but cleaning itself. According to an old Chinese saying, "If a cat washes its face, a visitor will come."

The Chicken Gun~~


Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners,military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the Chicken hurtled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatter-proof windshield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified Britons sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield, and begged the U.S. scientists for suggestions.
NASA responded with a one-line memo: "Thaw the chicken."

Because of their unusual shape, Hershey's Kisses contain more calories per ounce than the same amount of chocolate in other forms.
